Census 2021 – March 2021

Jay Swaminarayan,

The Census 2021 is coming up next month! Data from the census is used to plan and fund services in your area. Charities also use the information to help get the funding they need. So as well as it being a legal requirement to complete the census, filling out the details correctly is vital!

It seems that in the past people have filled the census incorrectly, meaning the data collected by government puts certain minorities at a disadvantaged position.

There are 3 main areas that relate to identity (religion, national identity and ethnicity):

  1. We encourage those who identify with the Hindu religion to answer as such in the relevant question.
  2. The national identity question can be completed with more than one answer, and we encourage all to also tick “other” which gives the opportunity to enter “Indian” as a place you also identify with, if this applies to you. This is not referring to your nationality.
  3. And finally, in regard to ethnicity, those that are of ‘Asian’ background can also ensure they tick the option of ‘Indian’ which is categorised in the sub options.
